Buckeye Quarry, South Amherst, Ohio
Long abandoned, the Buckeye Quarry ledges
are overgrown with brush and the quarry
bottom filled with water. In the late 1890s,
Buckeye Quarry measured 240 feet deep, 600
feet wide and 1,800 feet long. An early
Cleveland Quarries brochure referenced "No
place on earth provides a similar panorama to
that presented by Buckeye Quarry which is
visited by thousands of tourists every year.
No other place more dramatically portrays
man’s victory over Nature in more definite
terms than this deep, canyon-like, man-made
quarry reaching into the earth".

This picture appears on the back cover of the
"Sandstone Center of the World" book.
