Largest Sandstone Quarry (No. 6 Quarry), Amherst Township, OH |

On 6/22 we posted a picture of a channel cutter that was long past it's prime. If you look closely at this picture you will see a rail with a channel cutter being used at the No. 6 Quarry. The channel cutter would make cuts as deep as 15 feet by driving a steel ram into the sandstone as it moves inch by inch along the rails. The Gray Canyon Quarry opened in 1869 as the Haldeman Quarry - later became known as the Gray Canyon Quarry - and finally as the No. 6 Quarry upon the consolidation of th Cleveland Quarries Company. This quarry is reputed to have been one of the largest sandstone quarries in the world. Amherst Historical Society photo collection - date unknown (posted 6/23/07) - picture copyright information. |
