More about the Wakeman Quarries In 1875 James Nichol (see Nichols Quarry, Amherst, Ohio) and Dr. Cross purchased the James Wood farm (east side of the Vermilion River) in Florence Township and opened the first Wakeman Buff Stone Quarry. In 1876 James Nichol formed a partnership with Dudley Miller (known as Nichol & Miller) assuming management of the quarry. They operated the quarry until 1887 when it was purchased by the Cleveland Stone Company. The quarry was left unworked until 1892 when the Cleveland Stone Company reopened the quarries assigning the superintendent responsibilities to Peter Robertson. Mr. Robertson was one of many immigrants from Scotland employed in the Ohio stone industry. Robertson had learned the trade of quarryman in Scotland and served the Cleveland Stone Company as quarryman for one year and derrick boss for three years prior to the assignment of superintendent. In 1902 another tract of land was acquired on the west side of the river and Robertson supervised quarrying efforts at these quarries as well. Approximately sixteen to twenty men were employed with annual production of about 20,000 cubic feet of sandstone. SOURCE: A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio. Lewis Publishing Company, 1916.
