More About the Nickle Plate Quarry In the mid-1870s a small community called Nickle Plate sprang up in LaGrange Township. It was named by James Nichols who was superintendent of the Atlantic Company who operated teh quarry company. Ten quarry hourses and boarding houses existed for the quarry workers and their families. The Nickle Plate Quarry was known for its Blue Rock sandstone. The stone and its grindstones were shipped to all parts of the world. The stone was also used for foundations and sidewalks throughout the Village of Lagrange, Ohio. Today, a portion of the quarry property is privately owned. A second portion is owned by the Village of Lagrange and it was used as a portion of the village's water supply prior to the establishment of the Lorain County Rural Water Authority.
